In a year where challenges have become the norm, the essence of community and the spirit of giving remain unshaken in Willits. Ensuring that no one misses out on the joy and comfort of a warm Thanksgiving meal, Willits Community Services and Food Bank, in collaboration with the Willits Senior Center, have ingeniously reimagined their 31st annual Thanksgiving event: a drive-thru dinner that adheres to COVID-19 safety measures. Scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 26, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., this free event is a testament to the resilience and creativity of a community determined to celebrate Thanksgiving, pandemic or not.
From the hands-on contribution of inmates from the Parlin Fork Conservation Camp to generous donations raised through Tom Allman's Turkey Fundraiser and community contributors like Thy Sumvand, the event is a community-driven endeavor that promises not only turkey and stuffing but also a serving of unity and compassion. And while COVID restrictions may have altered the traditional setting and service methods, they haven’t dampened the community spirit, as demonstrated by officers B. Vielbig and R. Smith upholding long-standing traditions, and Willits Police Officer K. Kersmarki participating in some light-hearted promotional activities.
For those unable to make it to the drive-thru, worry not. If you are a homebound senior aged 60 or above, arrangements have been made to bring the Thanksgiving feast to your doorstep through the Meals on Wheels program.
